The best winter running shoes | Bergzeit review

2 minutes read
Which running shoes are best suited for winter runs on snow, ice or even slush? Trail running expert Danny from Bergzeit highlights his top 6 picks.

What makes for a good winter running shoe? Do I need a different shoe for running in winter than in summer? Yes, because the demands on winter running shoes, especially in the fells and on trails, are different from those on summer shoes. The winter shoe must protect your feet against moisture yet still be breathable, and above all, the winter sole needs to offer the best grip on ice, snow and frozen turf.

I have selected the best winter running shoes for the 2021/22 season that do what they promise and will keep you banging out those miles throughout the icy season.

If you want to run over snow and ice, you need the right footwear. Bergzeit expert Danny reveals his favourite winter products.

A wonder of grip: Salomon Wildcross GTX

The Wildcross with GORE-TEX membrane from Salomon is a versatile trail running and speed hiking shoe for winter. Its Contragrip® TA lug sole offers excellent grip on wet and soft surfaces. Stabilised side wings and an abrasion-resistant mesh material round off the overall package.

The ultra comfy one: adidas Terrex Agravic GTX

This lined running shoe for off-road use impresses with its sock-like fit, grippy Continental® tread sole and a robust, breathable mesh upper. It also looks casual enough to be used as an everyday sneaker for strolling around town or working at the office.

The perfect fit: Der Dynfit Ultra 100

The Dynafit Ultra 100 promises plenty of cushioning and a precise fit – here, too, the GORE-TEX Invisible Fit technology helps keep your feet in place. It makes sure that you can hardly feel the lining and that the shoes keep their sock-like fit. The Pomoca lug tread further guarantees the best grip on icy, snowy or slushy surfaces.

Also available for the ambitious female trail runner.

The Allrounder: Hoka Challenger ATR 6 GTX

The popular all-around classic Hoka Challenger is also available with a GORE-TEX membrane: the Hoka Challenger ATR 6 GTX protects your feet even on damp and cold days. The Meta-Rocker midsole ensures a particularly natural running feel thanks to the best rolling characteristics, while the outsole offers a secure grip on all surfaces thanks to 4 mm studs.

Sockfit extravaganza: La Sportiva Kaptiva GTX

A shoe that wears just like a sock: The soft, elastic knit material of the upper includes the tongue and cuff and is the trademark of this shoe. It provides an incomparable feeling. The Rock Guard FriXion® White rubber outsole is, of course, compatible with spikes.
